One of the remotest villages in Darjeeling town, Gorkhey is also the last village in West Bengal. A tiny yet gushing river called Gorkhey Khola runs on the edge of the village and once you cross it over a wooden bridge you are in Sikkim. Being secretly perched in a valley surrounded by thick pine forest, Gorkhey is still one of the least visited places in the Darjeeling district.
Gorkhey has been able to maintain its quaint charm over the years because it is not accessible by vehicle. The visitors here are mostly the trekkers from Phalut and it takes around 5 hrs of a downhill trek to reach Gorkhey from West Bengal side. But since this quiet village is close to Sikkim, it is easier to reach there from Sikkim. One can trek from Varsey in Sikkim to reach Gorkhey. For those who are not into trekking can go to and Ribdy or Bhareng in Sikkim, these two small villages are the nearest places accessible by vehicles before Gorkhey. It takes around an hour to reach Gorkhey from Bhareng and a little longer from Ribdy on foot.
Most of the lands in Gorkhey is blessed with fertile soil and used for cultivation. All villagers have their own cattle for milk and to make various dairy products. Some villagers recently have come with decent homestays for travelers as an additional means of earning.

Some travelers even try bathing in the river in summer when the water is relatively warmer.

This village has 30 families who are depended on farm produce. Travellers’ visiting this place prefer trekking their way up as the place is not accessible by vehicles and there are no motorable roads. It’s an ideal place to camp for a day or two. Best Time to Visit
The place can be visited throughout the year but if you love rhododendrons and want to catch a glimpse of it, then the best time to visit this gorgeous place is in the month of March to May and trek your way to this village. During this time, it is said that there is a nip in the air, the sky is clearer, and one can enjoy blossoms of the wild ‘lali guras.’ Although,The place has a park dedicated to the gorgeous flower called the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary.

The closest airport is in Bagdogra, approximately 170km away, whereas the closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, about 150km away. Gorkhey is around 4 hours drive from Darjeeling.
